The I\u00b3 project \u201cHighly Immersive Virtual Reality Applications for Maritime Systems\u201d focuses on the integration of localization data from motion capture systems in virtual reality applications.<\/p>\n

In this way, new possibilities are to be opened up to increase the immersion of virtual reality applications and to develop improved approaches for mapping realistic interactions between several people in virtual spaces. Within this framework, a prototype of a virtual reality training application is to be developed for the crew of the Hamburg fire department<\/a>’s firefighting vessel \u201cBranddirektor Westphal<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The project began in November 2020 and was completed at the end of October 2021.<\/p>\n

In the first phases of the project, a suitable training scenario will be designed in collaboration with the crew of the Branddirektor Westphal.<\/p>\n

The development of the prototype training application is then planned. To this end, a solution will first be developed to integrate the motion capture tracking data of the training participants into the virtual environment. This will be implemented by merging the localization data of the motion capture system with the localization data of the virtual reality headset.<\/p>\n

This is followed by the development of a training scenario, which is intended to depict an operational scenario of the crew of the Fire Chief Westphal.<\/p>\n

The development of the prototype training application is then planned. The first step is to develop a solution for integrating the motion capture tracking data of the training participants into the virtual environment. This will be implemented by merging the localization data of the motion capture system with the localization data of the virtual reality headset.<\/p>\n

This is followed by the development of a training scenario, which is intended to depict an operational scenario for the crew of the Fire Chief Westphal.<\/p>\n

Finally, a comprehensive evaluation and test phase is planned. Particular attention will be paid to possible improvements compared to previous physical training scenarios. These potential improvements will also be considered in relation to the development effort and costs of virtual training.<\/p>\n

The central project result will be a prototype virtual training scenario for the crew of the Branddirektor Westphal. Furthermore, the project results will be presented in two publications. In teaching, the project results will be integrated and demonstrated in the lectures \u201cPort Logistics\u201d and \u201cFactory Planning\u201d at the Institute of Maritime Logistics and the Institute of Logistics Engineering. In addition, two Master’s theses will be supervised as part of the project.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
