3: Chromatography of Leaf Pigments

Hello!

Have you always wondered why leaves change color in autumn and where the yellow, red, or orange coloring suddenly comes from?

We have already carried out two experiments on the chromatography of artificial dyes in felt-tip pens and in the coating of chocolate lentils. But you can also investigate the colors found in nature.

To do this, we want to investigate which color components are present in green leaves and carry out a chromatography of leaf pigments.

You will need this for the experiment with leaf pigments:

Here you will find the instructions for the experiment:

Instructions for chromatography of leaf pigments
Experiment log for chromatography of leaf pigments

You can also open and download the instructions and the experiment log for the experiment.

Before you carry out the experiment, complete the blog task and think about what components are contained in green leaves?

Keep your eyes open and look (depending on the season) for what leaf colors you can find on the trees! Feel free to write in the blog or send photos of examples from nature!
