Every plant has very different preferences for its environment. One prefers it drier, the other feels really comfortable in wet soil.
I was recently on vacation in Bordeaux, a warm region where a lot of wine is grown. There I learned that wine thrives best on loamy soil. This can retain water well, so that the roots do not dry out in hot temperatures and the young vines remain “fresh”.
