Hello!
Are you currently thinking about what you want to do after school?
Are you interested in chemistry, biology, engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer science and want to contribute to a more sustainable future?
Sustainable, resource-efficient, and climate-friendly production of food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fuels, building materials, metals, and plastics is made possible by chemical engineering and biotechnology.
As a bio- and chemical engineer, you will develop efficient (bio)catalysts and material conversion processes to produce new products or to realize more sustainable, energy-saving production processes for existing products. Chemical, biological, mechanical, and physical principles play a major role in this.

We have summarized the most important information about the Bachelor’s degree program “Chemical and Bioengineering” at TUHH (Technical University of Hamburg) in a document that you can open and download by clicking on the preview image. You can find more detailed information about the “Chemical and Bioengineering” degree program at TUHH directly on the homepage of the degree program.
Fernando, a research assistant at the Institute of Technical Biocatalysis at TUHH, explains what the “Chemical and Bioengineering” degree program at TUHH entails. Clicking on the image starts the video!
Information on the various degree programs in Process Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering at TUHH is also available on the Padlet of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Schlüter.
What is a degree program in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and computer science like? In the Bachelor’s program, you can choose the specialization Bioengineering or Chemical Engineering from the 4th semester onwards. Even as a student, you can work in research as a student assistant, for example, by conducting and evaluating experiments. After the Bachelor’s degree, you can choose a Master’s program and then pursue a doctorate, during which you will work on research projects.
Further information on the degree programs at the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) can be found at www.stuhhdium.de and www.tuhh.de.
We also interviewed students about their choice of study in STEM fields (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
We wanted to know how their hobbies and strengths led them to choose their field of study and how they feel about their choice now.
We currently have interviews for the following degree programs:
- Bioprocess Engineering
- Process Engineering
- Process Engineering and Chemistry, specifically in the field of Aerogel Research
- Mechatronics
- Energy and Environmental Engineering
- International Business and Engineering
In two further videos, you will learn about the research conducted at the ITB (Institute of Technical Biocatalysis) at the Technical University of Hamburg: Institute Director Prof. Dr. Andreas Liese explains how biocatalysis can contribute to a more sustainable future. Research Assistant Daniela explains how enzyme activity in lactase tablets is investigated at the ITB using HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) and GC (Gas Chromatography).

Would you like to be hands-on while pursuing your studies? Many companies in the field of chemical and bioengineering are active in and around Hamburg. Therefore, TUHH also offers the opportunity for a dual study program – further information can be found here: //dual.tuhh.de/.
