Why is Process Engineering Exciting?
Process engineering is a fascinating field because it combines chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering to develop, optimize, and scale processes, transforming raw materials into valuable products. It is central to industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food, driving innovation in sustainable technologies and environmental protection. The field offers the opportunity to solve complex, real-world problems and thus make a significant contribution to society by improving production processes, reducing waste, and developing new, sustainable materials and energy sources.

SMART Reactors for Future Process Engineering

We are facing the societal challenges of transitioning economic and production chains from fossil raw materials to sustainable and renewable raw materials. However, these can fluctuate seasonally and geographically in their availability and quality. Society therefore urgently needs processes and reactors that can flexibly react to fluctuating raw material properties. To enable such adaptation, a very high degree of process control is required: pressures, temperatures, concentrations, and dispersed phases must be continuously monitored in the reactors with suitable sensors.
Within the scope of the collaborative research centre, we want to address this problem
and enable SMART reactors through basic research. In the future, SMART reactors will convert sustainable renewable resources into various products in a more sustainable way (multi-purpose reactors) and operate autonomously (self-adapting), leading to more resilient processes that are more transferable between scales and locations.
