Make oat milk

You need for the experiment

  • 40 g rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseed (ground)
  • 500 ml cold water
  • 1 tea strainer
  • 1 hand blender
  • 1 small bowl
  • 1 cup (large)
  • 2 glasses
  • 1 flashlight

Goal of the experiment

Oat milk is a vegan alternative to milk, essentially made from oats and water. However, subtleties in the production process influence the result. Investigate what the addition of flaxseed does and find out in the additional experiment how the temperature affects the result.

Conducting the experiment:

Preparing the flaxseed:

Pour the flaxseed into the bowl. Add 4 tablespoons of water to the flaxseed and wait 15 minutes.

Put the rolled oats into the cup. Add the 500 ml of water. Puree the oat/water mixture for 30 seconds with the hand blender. Filter the mixture through the sieve. Pour about 250 ml of the filtrate into the first glass.

Add the flaxseed and water mixture to the other 250 ml of the filtrate. Puree the resulting mixture for 10 seconds. Pour this into the second glass.

Stir both glasses with a teaspoon and observe. Shine the flashlight through the glasses from time to time.

Additional experiment:

Carry out the experiment with oats and water using boiling water instead of cold water. Observe what changes.
