Pizza Mission 1

Felix reads a book

Yeast has many faces.

Pizza dough is usually yeast dough. Yeast dough is a dough prepared from flour, water, and baker’s yeast.

Depending on the type of pastry it is used for, other ingredients are added.

For a sweet cake, for example, sugar, eggs, milk, and butter are added, while a savory pizza dough usually has oil and salt on the ingredient list.

What is yeast?

Unlike the other dough ingredients such as flour, salt, oil, or water, yeast consists of small living organisms. These single-celled mini-fungi are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. But great powers slumber within these tiny creatures.

Felix wonders

What does yeast do in the dough?

You can best observe what yeast does in the dough if you prepare “dough” once with and once without yeast.

Below you will find a recipe for a small amount of yeast dough. Follow the instructions and prepare the dough once with and once without yeast before the next mission. What difference can you observe in the end?
