What do you whip cream with?

Question:

A hand mixer has whisks and dough hooks for different purposes. But what happens if you try to whip cream with the dough hooks?

You need for the experiment

  • half a cup of whipping cream (100 ml)
  • a hand mixer with whisks and dough hooks
  • a container for whipping cream
  • optional: ½ tsp sugar

If you have the opportunity to print more beaters with a 3D printer, you will also need our print files, which we have uploaded to the 3D printing platform printables, and a drill into which you can clamp the beaters. You can find further experiments on the 3D-printed beaters under Mixing with 3D-printed beaters.

Conducting the experiment:

(Depending on your available equipment and time, you can either just try whipping with the dough hooks or conduct a preliminary or even a parallel experiment with the whisks. Then you will need double the amount of cream and possibly a second mixer with a container.)

Pour the cream with the sugar into the cream container and whip it for several minutes with the dough hooks. Time how long it takes for the cream to become stiff (if it works at all).
