Seminare EIM
Lecturer: Ulf Kulau
StudIP-Link: Seminar topics changes every semester. Check out StudIP for details.
Language
Course is available in german and english.
Registration
The registration takes place according to the usual procedure at the TUHH. Direct registration is therefore not possible, as the seminars are assigned centrally.
Content
The seminar teaches the aspects of scientific work, publishing and the peer review process. In the course we will simulate a complete cycle of a conference publication. Students will be assigned a topic that will change each semester (depending on relevance). Students will be asked to write a survey paper or technical report on this topic, which will involve researching the literature and writing a paper. The paper will be submitted via a conference system, whereby the students will also act as reviewers and thus learn how to evaluate scientific articles and understand how the peer-review process works. The accepted papers are then presented, just like at a conference. Here, too, students will take on the role of presenters as well as critical audiences.
The aim for participants of our seminar is...
- to learn to tackle a topic on their own and to expand their knowledge on the same and beyond • to access and critically analyze the (related) literature
- to write an overview paper (survey, technology review) in a scientific manner
- to simulate the submission and review process of scientific conferences
- to give a presentation talk
Basic Guidelines to pass the seminar
- Write a technical report of your specific topic in form of a scientific paper
- Provide 2 reviews of other technical reports (via conference system)
- Final presentation of your technical report
We expect...
- Independent work → At the end the individual performance should be evaluated
- Independent time-management → All deadlines are clear and known
- Self-organization and self-reliant communication with the supervisor → e.g. arrange meetings, status updates, etc.
