2: How are aerogels produced?

Do you actually like jelly? This wobbly mass, through which you can see, is somehow exciting, isn’t it? If you think so too, you’re like Samuel Kistler, a chemist who studied jelly and invented aerogels in the process.

How were aerogels invented?

It all started with a bet by the chemist Samuel Kistler in 1931. He was fascinated by the wobbly consistency of gels, such as jelly, and he bet with a colleague that he could remove the liquid from it without it losing its shape. After many attempts, he finally succeeded and the first aerogel was created.

Felix has an idea

IMPORTANT:
“Aerogel” contains the word “gel”, because gels are the starting materials from which aerogels are made.

Felix wonders

Task:

What comes to mind with this word or the word “jelly”? Where do gels or other wobbly masses occur in nature or in everyday products? You can share your results with others in the community.

See you later and good luck!
