After your (subject-specific) Abitur or also after vocational training, you can study at a university, a technical university (TU), or a university of applied sciences (FH). Between the types of universities, you can also choose between a dual study program and a full-time study program.
But what exactly is what? Let’s start with dual and full-time study.
Dual Study Program:
In a dual study program, you study and work in a company at the same time. The theoretical phases at the university and the practical phases in the company alternate, either in a block model or on a daily basis. However, it is usually the block model with approx. 3 months at university, 3 months at the company. This makes the study program very structured and requires little self-organization.
With a dual study program, you receive a monthly salary, and tuition fees are often paid by the company.
In addition to your studies, you gain practical experience in a dual study program and can be taken on by the company after graduation.
Full-time Study Program:
In a full-time study program, as the name suggests, you study full-time at a college or university. It is a theory-heavy study program, involving attending lectures and seminars, as well as writing exams and papers. A lot of self-organization is required.
There is no salary for a full-time study program, but money can still be earned through BAföG (student financial aid) and/or a part-time job.
University:
At a university, the range of subjects is very diverse. From law to humanities to natural sciences, almost anything can be studied at a university. A university is very scientific and theoretical, with a focus on research.
The following degrees can be obtained at a university: Bachelor, Master, State Examination, Doctorate.
Technical University (TU):
At a technical university, the focus of the subjects is on technology, natural sciences, and engineering. The study program is largely theoretical and focuses on research. There are also often project work or laboratories where practical application is brought a little closer.
The following degrees can be obtained at a technical university: Bachelor, Master, Doctorate.
University of Applied Sciences (FH):
A university of applied sciences is usually more practice-oriented and often includes mandatory internships. The modules often take place in smaller groups, allowing for better supervision.
The following degrees can be obtained at a university of applied sciences: Bachelor, Master, (rarely Doctorate).
