Welcome to Candy Land! – Influence of sugar type on yeast activity

Yeast loves sugar. But does it have a favorite type? Which type of sugar really gets yeast going? The following experiment provides the answer:

Good to know:

Knowledge Box: Sugar Metabolism in the Yeast Cell

You can record your results in the observation log.

Observation Log: Sugar Types

What did your investigations reveal? Which sugar did the yeast like the most? How can the yeast’s preference be explained? Write us your results in the comments.

It’s gonna be hot – Influence of temperature on yeast activity

How does yeast react to different temperatures? When does it really get going and when does it become sluggish? Find out in our experiment.

Here’s how you do it:

Good to know:

Knowledge box Enzymes
Knowledge box Temperature optimum
Knowledge box RGT rule
You can record your results in the observation log.

Observation log temperature experiment

What did your investigations reveal? At what temperature does yeast feel most comfortable and is particularly active? Can the RGT rule be applied to the activity of yeast? Write us your results in the comments.

In search of the optimal temperature

At what temperature does yeast feel most comfortable? In our Yeast! lab, we will examine yeast and its peculiarities. Experiment for a group of 5 to 6 students (recommended for middle school).

Felix has a problem! He wants to bathe his pet, the yeast Yeastie. But his instructions got wet and the water made parts unreadable. Now he doesn’t know at what temperature Yeastie feels most comfortable. He can still see from the instructions that it is a two-digit number and that the last digit is a 5. He also thinks the bathing temperature was between 20°C and 50°C. Can you help Felix?

Embark on a search for the temperature optimum! You can read what this means in the knowledge box below.

Wissensbox Temperaturoptimum
Knowledge Box: Temperature Optimum

You can find out at what water temperature the yeast Yeastie prefers to splash around with an experiment. The experimental procedure is explained in the video below:

You can record your results on the following worksheet.
