Ziel: Gleichungssystem \(\mathbf{Ax}=\mathbf{b}\) lösen (\(\mathbf{A}\in \mathbb{R}^{m\times n}\), \(\mathbf{b}\in\mathbb{R}^m\))
Alternativ: betrachte Funktion \(f_{\mathbf{A}}: \mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^m\) mit \[f_{\mathbf{A}}(\mathbf{x})=\mathbf{Ax}\] und löse \(f_{\mathbf{A}}(\mathbf{x})=\mathbf{b}\).
Die genannte Funktion ist linear.
Definition 1. Es sei \(f:\mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^m\) eine Funktion. Dann wird \(f\) lineare Abbildung genannt, wenn die folgenden 2 Eigenschaften gelten:
Für alle Vektoren \(\mathbf{x},\mathbf{y}\in\mathbb{R}^n\) gilt: \[f(\mathbf{x}{\color{blue}+}\mathbf{y})=f(\mathbf{x}){\color{blue}+}f(\mathbf{y}).\]
Für alle Vektoren \(\mathbf{x}\in\mathbb{R}^n\) und alle \(\alpha\in\mathbb{R}\) gilt: \[f({\color{blue}\alpha} \cdot \mathbf{x})={\color{blue}\alpha \cdot } f(\mathbf{x}).\]
Lineare Abbildungen bilden Linien auf Linien ab.

Geometrische Operationen
Mit Abbildungen der Form \(\mathbf{x} \mapsto \mathbf{Ax}\) können geometrische Operationen beschrieben werden.
